logoKiva's Export - on Editgrid.com steroids

History

The first step to use Kiva's Export was to use offline programmes such as Microsoft Excel and OpenOffice.org Calc - Analysis Spreadsheets for both can be found here - to better analyse your portfolio of loans.  Then using Google Spreadsheets the data was accessible online and could be mixed with Exhibit 2.0 to create an interactive view of an export.

The next logical step was to find other ways to use the data online, Editgrid.com provided an ideal platform with the ability to use the same data to create .ics iCal files to view loan redemption schedules in a calendar (Wikipedia list of apps that support iCal), and KML files for more Google Earth / Maps and Microsoft Virtual Earth...

Description

As before, all you have to do is cut and paste the data from Kiva's export into your Editgrid.com spreadsheet - you can sign up for free here.
You automatically then have a iCal feed that could be used in Google Calendar, Mozilla Thunderbird / Sunbird / Lightning, Apple iCal, even Microsoft Office Outlook 2007.  A whole host of programmes and websites support iCal - wikipedia has a list here.
A KML feed is also available - without you ever having to enter location data (though you can do if you want).
The data can also be exported in an Exhibit 2.0 JSON format to be used in a similar fashion to the Googlespreadsheet (though you can't just link to the data it needs to be saved as a file on your webserver).
A number of stats can also been gleaned from the summary.

Requirements

You will need the following:

Setup

  1. Copy the Kiva Loans Editgrid spreadsheet by clicking on this link (it automatically saves a copy to your account - how clever is that!).
  2. You must set your copy of the spreadsheet to be read-only by the public.
  3. Open a copy of your data using Kiva's export button: http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=account&action=loans&export_excel=1 (will open in your web browser and ask you to log in to Kiva.org if you are not already)
  4. Copy the entire 'My loans' sheet and paste over the data in the 'My loans' tab within your Editgrid Spreadsheet.
  5. Ensure that there are no warning on the Summary sheet - if there are copy down the various rows in the 3 sheets highlighted until it matches the number of loans
  6. You can include additional data if you wish in the "Additional Info" sheet, including a specific coordinates, location name, primary activity and / or loan use (you can provide as much or as little as you like).
  7. Adjust any options on the "Settings" sheet - see further settings below.
  8. View your data feeds by going to the Properties View for your Editgrid Spreadsheet - or by selecting Data > My Data Format...
