The next logical step was to find other ways to use the data online,
Editgrid.com provided an ideal platform with the ability to use the
same data to create .ics iCal files to view loan redemption schedules
in a calendar (Wikipedia list of apps that support iCal),
and KML files for more Google Earth / Maps and Microsoft Virtual

Description
As before, all you have to do is cut and paste the data from Kiva's
export into your Editgrid.com spreadsheet - you
can sign up for free here.
You automatically then have a iCal feed that could be used in Google
Calendar, Mozilla Thunderbird / Sunbird / Lightning, Apple iCal, even
Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. A whole host of programmes and
websites support iCal - wikipedia has a list here.
A KML feed is also available - without you ever having to enter
location data (though you can do if you want).
The data can also be exported in an Exhibit 2.0 JSON format to be used
in a similar fashion to the Googlespreadsheet (though you can't just
link to the data it needs to be saved as a file on your webserver).
A number of stats can also been gleaned from the summary.
If you want pictures to appear in the map you need to save
a
collection of your own, using the Business ID as the filename - and
store them in a known location on your web server. I
recommend
having pictures around 100px by 100px and saved as .jpg. Or
if this is not possible you could use flickr.com or similar and include
the link directly in the cell of the 'KML' sheet.
Setup
Copy the Kiva Loans Editgrid spreadsheet by clicking on this link (it
automatically saves a copy to your account - how clever is that!).
You must set your copy of the spreadsheet to be read-only by the public.
Copy the entire 'My loans' sheet and paste over the data in
the 'My loans' tab within your Editgrid Spreadsheet.
Ensure that there are no warning on the Summary
sheet -
if there are copy down the various rows in the 3 sheets highlighted
until it matches the number of loans
You can include additional data if you wish in the
"Additional
Info" sheet, including a specific coordinates, location name, primary
activity and / or loan use (you can provide as much or as little as you like).
Adjust any options on the "Settings" sheet - see further
settings below.
View your data feeds by going to the Properties View for
your Editgrid Spreadsheet - or by selecting Data > My Data
Format...
Further Settings
Location coordinates are generated by looking up a location
value
in the "Countries" sheet. Each country is listed with
coordinates
which corresponds approximately to its centre point. So that
markers are not stacked on top of each other a random number is added
to each marker so that they are displaced around the centre point.
The amount of displacement depends on the total number of
loans
and the number of loans for that country, the greater the number the
wider the random displacement. If a small country has a very
large number of loans then there is a possibility of markers being on
the edge or outside of their country - if this happens an adjustment of
the map factor can be made in the "Settings" sheet.
If you want to include a logo, or an image for each of your
loans
a link can be added to the KML file - which can be set using the
options in the "Settings" sheet.
